Testimonials

I've learned various tech skills since late high school, but the problem was that I didn’t have a roadmap. With DataCamp, I went from chewing parts of different apples to learning using a roadmap provided on the platform.

What drew me to Data science?

My love for numbers—Growing up, I followed football, and apart from the scores, I loved comparing the stats behind these games and enjoyed how one can predict, to some extent, the outcome of a future game using the statistics from previous games.

My background

I've been a tech enthusiast since I was a little kid playing video games on his family's desktop computer.

I wanted to major in Computer Science in college, and thankfully, I got a spot to study it. But soon after my admission, a strike was called, and I had to stay at home and wait for it to be called off.

Instead of sitting around doing nothing, I started taking online courses, and it wasn't as easy as I thought—I didn't know my way around the huge tech space.

That was before I discovered DataCamp.

How did I discoverDataCamp?

I discovered DataCamp through Ebonyi Laureates when I was lost in the tech space.

That year, they partnered with datacamp.com/donates to give out learning slots to interested members, and I was fortunate enough to get a spot.

The organisation held a seminar for our cohort, during which DataCamp’s platform—including the learning track section—was explained to us.

What were my goals when you started?

My initial goal was to establish a solid footing in the tech space and prepare for college, and I did just that.

As time passed, my goals developed, and I’m currently studying large language models and generative AI in preparation for a master's degree after I'm done with my undergraduate studies.

What about DataCamp works well for me?

First, the teachings are so well done, and the exercises are so practical that you can’t go through a course without gaining the knowledge.

The step-by-step process helps me gradually integrate into the scope of the course.

The daily challenges, learning streaks and project space have been very helpful to my learning journey.

BenefitsI've gotten frommyDataCamp Donates scholarship

Sharing my DataCamp certifications on LinkedIn and telling my learning stories on the platform has connected me with amazing personalities and job opportunities.

I got my first internship in Research and Data in a year and graduated from that to a full-time role—even as a student.

Now, I have another intern role to learn Generative AI in Artificial Intelligence - a skill I'm particularly interested in and hope to pursue further in my master's degree program.

It's been a fairy tale journey, and it's not ending soon.

All my life all I ever wanted was to pass through medical school and come out as a renowned medical professional. As of then, working actively in the hospital was something I so much dreamed of. Years went by, and I was close to realizing these dreams of mine until something different struck my interest and changed the trajectory of my career. It was in one of the last classes in my final year during a Molecular Biology class while we were being taught Bioinformatics, that I first heard of Data Science, and funnily, it came from a professor I had missed some of his classes and by serendipity, attended that morning, only to witness a lecture that would go on to spur my fervor for data science. I could remember vividly how this professor, in trying to explain to us the significance of patients' data in medical analysis, took his time to open our eyes to the world of data science in the healthcare system. Ever since then, I took a huge interest in it and would go on to research and watch a lot of YouTube videos that helped me gain more clarity. By the end of this, I was sure I no longer wanted to work directly in the hospital to play my part in the healthcare industry; I knew I wanted something different that would give me more flexibility and space, to explore the patients’ data in ways that would be vital in proffering novel solutions to healthcare problems.

For every journey, there's a price to pay for it, and sometimes this price may come as an obstacle that we must overcome to further this journey. In my case, I was sure of what I wanted but the platform to leverage and achieve this dream wasn't there, and it posed a quandary that I needed to overcome. Thanks to Laureates Science Innovation and Education Initiative - Laureates SIE (Ebonyi Laureates), whose Facebook post about their partnership with DataCamp Donates to offer a scholarship to learn data science came to my rescue. I never knew there was a remote data academy so structured and organized, until I came across DataCamp through the opportunity offered to me by Ebonyi Laureates SIE. As someone who started from scratch from a non-tech background, I couldn't have dreamed of a better beginner-friendly environment than DataCamp.

It's been two years now since learning on DataCamp, and I only keep getting better in my pursuit of becoming a renowned healthcare data scientist. I have leveraged the skills I acquired so far to launch my portfolio website, where I displayed all the projects, both personal and open-source, that I have worked on and contributed to; all of which wouldn't have been possible without DataCamp. I have equally had the opportunity to work on contract-based data science and analysis projects for clients I got through LinkedIn and Upwork, and seeing myself pull off such value as someone who two years ago, had no knowledge about data science, is something I entirely appreciate DataCamp and Ebonyi Laureate SIE for.

Currently, I am deepening my knowledge of Machine Learning by acquiring skills in Medical Imaging, Deep Learning, NLP, and Streamlit through the Machine Learning Scientist with Python track; all of which I intend to leverage in pursuing a research-based MSc in Biomedical Engineering, particularly in the area of Neuroimaging with ultimate goal of becoming a Professor of Neuroscience in the nearest future. You see, all of these dreams are now very glaring to me because of the strong foundation I have achieved on learning through the DataCamp scholarship; an opportunity I'm forever grateful for. The benefits that DataCamp Donates through Ebonyi Laureates SIE present abound, and are very substantial in boosting all-round inclusion into technological advancements of people from underdeveloped societies like mine.

Overall, the impact of DataCamp on my journey to becoming a resourceful healthcare data scientist can not be overstated, and my story will never be complete without acknowledging the gracious opportunity presented to me through Ebonyi Laureates SIE. I only hope to keep getting better and carrying with me the good news about DataCamp. Until then, let me hop back to my computer and get my day going with some data exploration.
